Guten Tag! Wie geht's?

My name is [Magus Ferox], and I'll be sharing with you the things that I learn in my German 100 class, a college level course in speaking conversational German. Keep in mind, I'm not a native German, so if you are and you find errors here, your help is most appreciated.

Das Alphabet
Pronunciation list for the 26 characters of the alphabet, plus 4 special character.
a "ah" b "beh" c "tseh" d "deh" e "eh" f "eff" g "geh" h "hah" i "ih" j "jot" k "kah" l "ell" m "emm" n "enn" o "oh" p "peh" q "kuh" r "err" s "ess" t "teh" u "uh" v "fau" w "weh" x "iks" y "üeppsilon" z "tsett"

ä "ae" ö "oe" ü "ue" Umlauts appear as two small dots over the a, o, and u.
ß "ess-tsett," pronounced as a double "s" (ss)

Note: "sp" at the beginning of the word is read as "shp", "st" as "sht".
The sound "sh" is in German written "sch"

German Pronuciation 2

Das Zählen von 1 bis 1.000
Counting from one to 1,000. Note that German numbers never have a space between the individual words, and that they use the decimal point instead of commas.
0=null 1=eins 2=zwei 3=drei 4=vier 5=fünf 6=sechs 7=sieben 8=acht
9=neun 10=zehn 11=elf 12=zwölf 13=dreizehn 14=vierzehn 15=fünfzehn 16=sechzehn
17=siebzehn 18=achtzehn
19=neunzehn 20=zwanzig 21=einundzwanzig 22=zweiundzwanzig  23=dreiundzwanzig 24=vierundzwanzig 25=fünfundzwanzig 26=sechsundzwanzig
27=siebenundzwanzig
28=achtundzwanzig 29=neunundzwanzig 30=dreißig

From here, now that you see the pattern, it continues in much the same fashion, with the numeral in the ones position proceeding the number in the tens position, separated by the word "und" which means "and" in English. And always, never place any spaces between the words.

40=vierzig 50=fünfzig 60=sechzig  70=siebzig 80=achtzig 90=neunzig 100=hundert (or "einhundert")  101=hunderteins 1.000=tausend

In German, there are three groups of nouns. Masculine, feminine, and neuter. They are indicated by the definite article that precedes each noun. (der=m die=f das=n) These definite articles funstion like the English definite article, "the." In the vocab list below, the nouns are given in boldface, preceded by their definite article, and those that have a plural form, have a ,- after the word. These letters get tacked on to the end of the word, and any umlauts are placed on the A O or U closest to the end of the word."Die" also serves to indicate plurals, when you change the noun to make a plural, it becomes feminine. Also note that the first letter of all nouns are always capitalized.

Nouns nouns2

Verbs are used with subject pronouns, and have to be conjugated. To conjugate a verb, remove the "en" ending, and add the new ending based on the desired subject pronoun.

Subject Pronouns Translated
Ich
-I du -you (familiar) er -he, it es -it sie -she, it wir -we ihr -you (familiar pl.) sie -they Sie -you (formal, sg. and pl.)

In spoken German, the meanings of sie (she), sie (they) and Sie (you) can be distinguished by the corresponding verb forms and by context. In written german, Sie (you) is always capitalized.

sie + singular verb form = she
sie + plural verb form = they
Sie + plural verb form = you (formal)

Conjugating Verbs
Each subject pronoun has its own verb form. Taking the verb, remove the "en" ending to create the stem. Place the desired subject pronoun before the verb, or in some cases, after the verb. (Will elaborate in Sentence Structure) Add the letters designated for that subject pronoun for the new ending.

Ich- "e"
du- "st"
er, sie, es- "t"
wir- "en"
ihr- "t"
sie, Sie- "en"

In verbs whose stem ends in d, t or n, add "e" for forms du, er/sie/es, and ihr.

EXAMPLES:
Ich brauche- I need
du brauchst- you need
er/sie/es braucht- he/she/it needs
wir brauchen- we need
ihr braucht- you(familiar pl.) need
sie brauchen- they need
Sie brauchen- you (formal sg. and pl.) need

Ich arbeite- I work
du arbeitest- you work
er/sie/es arbeitet- he/she/it works
wir arbeiten- we work
ihr arbeitet- you (familiar pl.) work
sie arbeiten- they work
Sie arbeiten- you (formal sg. and pl.) work

Some verbs are irregular. They have different endings for their conjugation, and some even change their stem.

Vokabeln
Verbs2

Sentence structure is almost nonexistant in German, though as a rule the verb is always in the second postion, and the noun at the end.

Ich heiße [Magus Ferox]. I am called [Magus Ferox].
Wie heißt du? How are you called?

Word order ususally has expressions of time preceding expressions of place.

Monika geht heute Abend ins Kino.
Robert war gestern nicht dort.

Monika goes to the movie theater this evening.
Robert didn't go there yesterday.

English usually uses word order to signal the difference between a subject and a direct object. The usual word-order pattern is statements is subject, verb, and direct object. These two sentences, in English, have very different meanings.
Subject      Verb    Direct object
The man      visits   the professor.
The professor   visits   the man.

German, on the other hand, uses case to signal the difference between subject and a direct object.

2003-03-23 [Aristotle]: Hmm, if 101 is "einhundert", then is 102 "zweihundert"? So, what's 200?

2003-03-28 [Anathoth]: 102 is hundertzwei, not zweihundert. 200 is zweihundert. I dunno why they use einhundert, just to confuse us poor English speakers. :D Prolly coz it's redundant to say hunderteins, einhundert is more colloquial.

2003-03-28 [Anathoth]: zweitausendfünfhundertsiebenunddreißig!!!! *dances* 2734. And that's how you actually write it out, with NO spaces between.

2003-04-24 [hippo]: argh.. wrong wrong.. its zweitausendsiebenhundertvierunddreißig.. and about your 100 problem: 100 = einhundert 101= hunderteins OR einhunderteins

2003-04-25 [Anathoth]: Oh. Damn! *hides* Hehe, Thanks Hippo! :D

2003-05-08 [Oscura]: I think that in "Robert war gestern nicht heir." is a mistake. I think it's "hier" and not "heir". or do you mean "dort"? I thaught that "didn't go there " means "ging nicht dorthin" ? And one more: You can say "Das Zählen" or "Die Zahlen von 1 bis 1'000", but not "Das Zahlen", because "Das Zahlen" means that what you do when you give money for a product.

2003-06-15 [LoneTears]: Wow, this is great, I've always wanted to learn SOMETHING German....

2003-09-12 [Aradon Templar]: wow! this could help in my German I class!!!

2003-11-14 [Thraganux]: weird... just from listening to music like rammstein, megaherz, and blumchen i can understand snippets of german

2003-11-24 [LoneTears]: whoo hoo, go rammstein

2003-11-28 [veli]: "Einhundert" is 100, NOT 101. I've changed that.

2004-04-05 [zela]: Wie heisst du? just means how are you? not how are you called

2004-04-15 [Sturmi]: "Wie heisst du?" means "What's your name?".      Es sollte "Die Zahlen" oder "Das Zählen" sein, nicht "Das Zahlen" da oben...

2004-04-21 [Sturmi]: hello?

2004-05-13 [Nyaah*]: god damnit my german is crap O_o gimmi 1 more year and my english will be better than my german...dont try to learn it!!! im learining it since 18 years and i still cant speak it properly :/

2004-06-05 [XdeAdbaByAngelX]: Hi, i know this may osund stupid but i was just wondering if some one could help me a little bit because i think i am bout to blow my german final in school. I am so lost in this language... so if some one could help id be really apreciative

2004-06-07 [Blonka]: wow you have help my german alot cause its kinda close to english and i speak english so im trying i just wanna say thak you

2004-06-07 [Scooz]: Is "Langeweile" how you say boredom or I am bored?

2004-06-13 [Loneliness]: Guten Tag!

2004-06-13 [Loneliness]: wie gehts?

2004-06-13 [Loneliness]: Guten Tag?

2004-06-17 [Sturmi]: Tag Elte. Es scheint, diese wiki hier ist ganz vergessen. "Langweilig" means boring and "Mir ist es langweilig" is I'm bored, [Scooz]

2004-06-17 [Scooz]: Ah, thanx very much

2004-06-17 [Sturmi]: you're welcome ^_^

2004-06-20 [Loneliness]: im not that good at german sturmi.....i just know a few things.

2004-06-20 [Sturmi]: hehe, ok :p

2004-06-29 [the 5th apocalyptic horseman]: lol well im native german, but after being in canada for 10 month i speak more english than german for some reason. oh well, soon going back, i'll learn it again... so whatcha pplz doin here?

2004-11-24 [amyleewolf14]: Guten Abend!

2004-11-24 [Yiwerra]: Guten Abend! siebenhundertdreiundvierzigtausendzweihundertachtundfünfzig mal hallo!

2004-11-24 [amyleewolf14]: lol... that took me a minute to understand.. i had to get pen and paper... lol... im taking german 1 at my school (and only 2nd quarter), so i'll understand some things and not others... but i'll try my best... ^.^ .... so... wie geht's?

2004-11-25 [Yiwerra]: awwww thats so sweet!! :D :D  cant really believe people learn german! i mean .. o.O like who even wants to go to germany?? XD hehe. sorry for the numbers.. i just wanted to make fun, it took even for me a little time to write it down XD so you also got 743 258?? :D  .. hehe ^-^  mir geht's gut! :D und dir? :D

2004-11-25 [amyleewolf14]: well it was either spanish, french, or german... i wanted to take german originally then my family was like "romance languages are easier" so i asked for french which was taken so i stuck with german (even tho i SHOULD take spanish cuz of business and such but o well)... so ive been in it for a lil while... i dunno if my german that im taking would help me in germany anyways cuz it really depends on where ur going... but yeah... yay! ^.^ i got the numbers right... lol... XD.... sehr gut danke!

2004-11-25 [Yiwerra]: oooh i understand :D ..well im sure the german you learn helps you here!! :D well sure people have different accents, but thats the same everywhere, isnt it ^-^

2004-11-25 [amyleewolf14]: true... very true... but its not just the accents... there's different versions really... like theres a big difference between northern and southern germany... some use slang and some use formal... so it depends on where you go... and austria speaks german but its a different form...

2004-11-25 [Sturmi]: nah. But they're all supposed to know the "normal" german, so you should be able to talk to them anyway

2004-11-25 [Yiwerra]: yep. austrians are weird, i agree. and yea there are accents... but beside some words i dont think there's such a big difference o.O  muhaha, just dont go to bavaria XD

2004-12-02 [Nyaah*]: moin moin as we say here in north germany ^^ wasnt here for ages!

2004-12-02 [Nyaah*]: about what [Yiwerra] said:bavarians..they do understand YOU and YOU understand the "younger" people..but dont try to talk to a grandmother, trust me i tried it and i was shocked that i didnt understand ONE WORD! there are some words that are only used in some parts of germany.the salutations goes from "moin moin" in the north to "servus" or even "grützi" in the south! and there are a lot of small things like the word "feudel" (mop). i really didnt know that already people in berlin (and berlin isnt too far away from where i live) dont know that word feudel O_o they say "wisch mopp"... and we say "pfannkucken" (pancak) and they say "eierkuche", they call pfannkuchen what we call "berliner"

2004-12-02 [Nyaah*]: and in bavarian they say "krapfen" for berliner (pfannkuchen..) O_o

2004-12-02 [Yiwerra]: damn =S exactly. weird.... but i guess its the same everywhere. :) i do get people from texas but forget bristol.. i dont get a word of their english =s

2004-12-02 [Sunrose]: I think there is no country in the world where they have no dialects, since that's basically what they are... :)

2004-12-02 [amyleewolf14]: even in english people pronounce things differently... like new orleans... for example...

2004-12-03 [Nyaah*]: they even write it totaly diffrent O_o

2004-12-03 [Nyaah*]: HAHAH i just remember a bavarian sentens its "wu wi di ku ir he hi ho" and we in the north would say "wo will die kuh ihr heu hin haben" XD hahah its just too funny"

2004-12-03 [Sunrose]: they would have to, for the words that are only present in that dialect. And compare English to American: honor and honour and so forth ;)

2004-12-09 [Yiwerra]: oh hell yea. and what we're mostly affected by is american because of all movies and the internet and so on.. haha and i keep on writing things like "gonna" "anyways" "wanna" in class in scholl XD so get a bad mark of course ;D

2004-12-10 [amyleewolf14]: oy.... stuff like that makes me not want to be American... *sighs and shakes head*... Why couldn't I be European?

2004-12-10 [amyleewolf14]: ^.^ lol... I love Europeans... Technically I am if you wanna look at my heritage... Northern European (too many countries to remember) and Native American...

2004-12-27 [Gone123456789]: Hey, good work on this wiki, but it's really basic stuff. I learned all this in the first week of German I. No offense, it's a good for beginners, but is there a wiki that gives lessons on German?

2004-12-28 [amyleewolf14]: Hate to say it... But Accio is right... All this stuff is just the basics...

2004-12-28 [amyleewolf14]: Even if I just came from German I.... I already learned all this in like the first 2 or 3 weeks....

2004-12-28 [Gone123456789]: Yeah, not to dis.

2004-12-28 [amyleewolf14]: *nods in agreement*.... The people here are fun to talk to and they help you learn more... But the wiki itself needs more... Or at least... Whenever you get the time.... I know it's difficult to find spare time when you're schedule is tight *speaks from experience*....

2005-01-14 [NightHawk]: Whoa... ich wusste nicht, dass du Deutsch kannst, Magus O.o

2005-01-14 [Yiwerra]: erm. well what kinda stuff could be add then?

2005-01-14 [Gone123456789]: Well like verbs and irregular verbs... and like slang talk, so we dont sound so preppy when speaking with other germans. Like Was Gibt's instead of Was ist los

2005-01-14 [NightHawk]: Ich könnte euch Schweizerdeutsch lehren... LOL

2005-01-15 [amyleewolf14]: I've come to a conclusion that I am a failure.... I can comprenhend everything in german except the nominative and accusitive case.... it confuses the hell out of me... therefore I am a failure.... *sniffle*....

2005-01-15 [NightHawk]: What? Those are the easiest of the two cases LOL Nominative is used ONLY for subjects and predicate nominatives. In English, we don't say, "I am him," we say "I am he." Same for German. Accusative changes from the Nominative only in the singular masculine gender, from "der" to "den" or "ein" to "einen." Accusitive can be more confusing concerning prepositions. Basically, you use accusative for prepositions whenever the action isnt already done. "Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch" is Dative, but "Ich stelle das Buch auf den Tisch" is accusative. A little easier?

2005-01-17 [Yiwerra]: omg. now im confused myself O_O (and i speak german)

2005-01-18 [Gone123456789]: Whoa, what?

2005-01-18 [amyleewolf14]: lol....

2005-01-18 [amyleewolf14]: i get that part... its just that on my homework they make it all complicated and stuff.... if i had my book with me id give an example but i dont... so crap... um... yeah... possibly tomorrow (if i can get on) i will give an example of the confusion my book has given me....

2005-01-18 [NightHawk]: O.o okay... I'll see if I can help you. I consider myself somewhat of a laguage whore, actually, so I can probably help you sort this stuff out ^^

2005-01-18 [NightHawk]: You know, I was thinking that for the newbies there should be a *real* pronunciation key... not just how to say the letters. Otherwise there'll be people thinking that the German "jot" sounds like the English verb "jot" .. .... ....

2005-01-29 [Nyaah*]: im already starting to talk english to my friends coz it so much easier hehehe! stupid german!!! O_O

2005-01-29 [Gone123456789]: lol

2005-01-29 [Nyaah*]: well ich stand auf einem spitzen stein und spuckte in die spree hinein...that should explain everything...O_o but i like the new orthography wich allowes something like "die schi>fff<ahrt"

2005-02-09 [Yiwerra]: ehm, whats your point actually? besides, about the pronounciation key - the question is, how should it be like?

2005-02-09 [NightHawk]: I mean a key to say HOW the individual letters are pronounced when speaking. Like "Z" does not make the voiced "S" sound like in English, it makes a "ts" sound, same with "C" (most of the time), and most people will never figure out hos to say the ü, ö, and ä sounds unless they're told. *snort* I suppose I could stop being lazy and do it myself, but... well, like I said, I'm a lazy ass...

2005-02-09 [Ich]: you can find guides like that all over the internet and of course picking up a book helps too ^_^

2005-02-09 [NightHawk]: Well, yes, but the point was to turn this into a guide... I think... *stops*

2005-02-09 [Yiwerra]: hmm its a bit difficult. and i wonder if someone should do it hisself, or picking up one system from the internet

2005-02-10 [Ich]: lol I just realized I have one written on my wall

2005-02-10 [Yiwerra]: well, add it then!

2005-02-10 [Ich]: ok. I'll just put it on here and the owner can decide to put it up.

2005-02-10 [Ich]: ok nevermind about that

2005-02-10 [Ich]: I'll put a link for it

2005-06-04 [Lady Wolf 07]: I'M FINALLY OUT OF GERMAN II!!!!!! I dunno what I got yet... But I know it's either an A or B.... cases killed me on the exam.... adjectives are evil!!! especially when you've just learned them the week before...

2005-06-05 [Nyaah*]: genau!

2005-06-07 [Lady Wolf 07]: ja... und ich bin sehr gemütlich....

2005-06-07 [Nyaah*]: hehe warum bist du gemütlich? ^^

2005-06-12 [Blue Hawk]: Hallo. I'm German. but I don't speak the language very well anymore. This page helps me out. Danke!

2005-06-14 [Lady Wolf 07]: Ich bin gemütlich weil ich aus Deutschklasse bin... I miss it though ... *sad* ...

2005-06-14 [NightHawk]: Aus Deutsch? Meinst du "aus DeutschLAND?" XD

2005-06-14 [Nyaah*]: how comes u speak such a good german [NightHawk]?

2005-06-14 [Yiwerra]: hahaha

2005-06-15 [NightHawk]: Warum kann ich so gut Deutsch? Eigentlich weil ich fast ein Jahr in der Schweiz gewesen bin. Früher habe ich auch ein Jahr Deutsch in Amerika gelernt, aber hier ist es sehr intensiv...

2005-06-15 [Yiwerra]: und schweizerisch O_O

2005-06-15 [Sturmi]: lol.

Z.b. hier sagt man "abmachen."

2005-06-17 [Lady Wolf 07]: *pulls out german dictionary*... im not THAT fluent yet... grrr to you... familiar words... forgotten meanings...

2005-06-17 [Nyaah*]: hahah which words u dont know? i´ll translate them ^^

2005-06-17 [NightHawk]: LOL ich weiss, wo Dänemark liegt :P Deutsch ist toll, fast wie eine geheimnisse Sprache ^^ (übersetz das nicht XD)

2005-06-17 [Nyaah*]: hahah ok ^^ ja kaum jemand hier spricht es :P

2005-06-23 [Lady Wolf 07]: ok... i understood that.... just really long phrases (such as like a paragraph) throws me off...

2005-06-23 [Lady Wolf 07]: Nyaah*: hahah ok ^^ ja kaum jemand hier spricht es :P                ??????

2005-06-24 [Yiwerra]: nyaah is grade in der mongolei :P  :D

2005-06-24 [Lady Wolf 07]: *blinks*... *bah*...

2005-06-24 [Sturmi]: in der mongolei? Lol, das hatte ich nie gehört

2005-07-04 [Shadow07]: I wanna learn German!

2005-07-04 [NightHawk]: Go on exchange :P To Germany ^^

2005-07-04 [Sturmi]: I did do that. Aber nur für 3 Monate, als ich 16 war.

2005-07-06 [Lady Wolf 07]: *confused for the sole purpose of i have no idea what you guys are talking about... understanding what you're saying... but not quite getting the topic*

2005-07-09 [NightHawk]: Oh... do it again ^^ longer :P

2005-07-14 [Lady Wolf 07]: ???

2005-07-14 [NightHawk]: Um... magic?

2005-07-22 [Lady Wolf 07]: someone help me out... ive forgotten the names of all the cases.... nominative, accusative, dative, and what else?

2005-07-22 [Sturmi]: genitive

2005-07-25 [Lady Wolf 07]: thankies

2005-08-31 [Nyaah*]: i dont vene know these XD hahahah im so bad in deutsch

2006-12-23 [otakubeth]: Hallo, ich heisse Beth. ich bin 17 Jahre alt und ich habe kurtze rote hare (i think that's the right spelling) und blaue augen. Ich spiele Tennis und die Klomatten. Sry if my spelling is bad. I just started German.

2007-02-09 [Lady Wolf 07]: Awww.... Sehr gut...

2007-03-05 [Nyaah*]: KLOMATTEN???? HAHAHHHHAHAHA what did you want to say? i dont think you wanted to say you "play bogmeadows"!!! the rest of the sentence was excellent!!

2007-03-13 [Lady Wolf 07]: oy

2007-04-13 [Company Awesome]: Klomatten? Das ist der Hammer... Tag [Lady Wolf 07]. Wie bist du heute?

2007-04-13 [Ocean Soul]: Nicht nett, sich so lustig zu machen :/

2007-04-13 [Lady Wolf 07]: Eh. Ich bin Krank.

2007-04-13 [Lady Wolf 07]: Ich kann kaum schlucken.

2007-04-14 [Company Awesome]: Es tut mir leid, [Lady Wolf 07]. [Ocean Soul], ich bin nicht nett. Kleine Teufel=mich. ;p

2007-04-24 [Ocean Soul]: xD Da ist was dran!

2007-04-24 [Ocean Soul]: Aber du bist doch ganz gut :3 Verstehe alles was du sagst... bzw. schreibst! ^_^

2008-02-05 [lostangel]: i'm glad i saw this. i'm living in Germany and i don't speak alot of it though my friend is trying ti teach me.

2008-03-13 [Lady Wolf 07]: It's been like a year and I haven't spoken an ounce of German. Nor have I even looked at any German notes or anything German. Last week I randomly found my missing mp3 player and on it was some Rammstein. Trying to decifer words in my forgotten foreign tongue made me want to pick it up again. Sooooo. I got a workbook and I'm on my way to studying and picking up German again. YAYS.... ^__^

2008-03-13 [Lady Wolf 07]: Oh! And where I work I usually get a lot of Spanish customers and occasionally a French person from Canada... But maybe once a month or so I get a German customer. So, the other day I randomly heard some German from a group of customers passing me by in the hall and I couldn't help but smile. :D
